Old furniture in a new frame
To me, old furniture is more than something to replace. It can carry a family story, the value of craftsmanship and personal memories. For my master’s thesis, I designed a modular furniture system that gives these pieces a new place in contemporary interiors, allowing them to remain useful. A separate steel structure frames the original furniture and supports it on tensioned cables. The original piece remains accessible, while new shelves provide additional storage. Individual sections can be connected and extended to suit both the furniture and the space. The white structure and stainless steel joints form a quiet frame that lets the original surfaces and character of the old pieces stand out. I developed the design through sketches, models and joint testing, culminating in a working full-scale prototype. The result is Historio: a system that combines repeatable structural components with the individuality of furniture we care about.
