CLT table

From building offcuts to outdoor furniture

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a remarkable material. It makes it possible to use timber as the load-bearing structure of buildings tens of metres high — and now even hundreds. CLT panels are large sheets of solid timber, built up from layers glued together with the grain running at right angles. Despite their many advantages, they also have a drawback: the offcuts left when window and door openings are cut out. I chose to turn this waste into a resource, designing a table and benches around the dimensions of these offcuts to make efficient use of the material. The set is also intended to complement the architecture of the house whose garden it might occupy.
